Alumina ceramic components can be manufactured to precise dimensions, but tolerances should be assigned according to function rather than copied from a metal drawing. Ceramic processing includes forming, sintering and, when required, diamond grinding. Each stage affects achievable geometry, cost and lead time.
As-Fired vs Machined Dimensions
As-fired parts are shaped before sintering and normally allow more dimensional variation because shrinkage must be controlled. They are economical for larger quantities when the design accepts practical tolerances. Critical interfaces can be left with machining allowance and finished after sintering.
Post-fired diamond grinding is used for tight diameters, flatness, parallelism, sealing surfaces and location features. It improves accuracy but adds processing time, inspection and cost. A drawing should clearly distinguish functional ground surfaces from non-critical as-fired surfaces.
Features That Increase Manufacturing Difficulty
- Deep, small-diameter holes and long internal bores
- Sharp internal corners and narrow slots
- Very thin walls or abrupt wall-thickness changes
- Tight positional tolerances across distant features
- Unnecessarily fine finishes on non-contact surfaces
Rounded internal corners and balanced sections reduce stress and simplify machining. If a sharp corner is required for mating clearance, consider adding relief to the mating metal component instead of specifying an impossible ceramic corner.
Datums and Inspection
Define datums from the way the ceramic part locates in the assembly. Too many independent dimensions can create conflicting tolerance requirements. Identify the few surfaces that control fit, alignment, sealing or electrical spacing, and allow reasonable freedom elsewhere.
Inspection method should match function. Coordinate measurement, optical measurement, air gauging, roundness measurement and surface profilometry may produce different practical requirements. Discuss difficult measurements before production.
Surface Finish and Edge Treatment
A polished surface can reduce friction or leakage in some sliding and sealing applications, but it is not automatically necessary. Specify roughness only where performance depends on it. Edges should normally include a small chamfer or radius to reduce chipping during handling and assembly.
Cost-Effective RFQ Checklist
- Mark critical dimensions and reference datums
- Separate as-fired and ground surfaces
- State flatness, parallelism and finish only where required
- Include mating-part information and assembly method
- Provide prototype and annual quantities
