Aluminum nitride is selected because it can conduct heat while remaining electrically insulating. However, a catalogue thermal-conductivity value does not directly predict the temperature of a finished electronic assembly. Material grade, part thickness, surface flatness, interfaces and attachment method all contribute to total thermal resistance.
Material Conductivity Is Only One Part of the System
Heat must travel through the AlN component and across every interface before reaching a heat sink or coolant path. A thin, well-seated component may outperform a thicker component made from a nominally higher-conductivity grade. Contact resistance can dominate when surfaces are uneven or clamping pressure is inconsistent.
Thickness and Heat-Flow Direction
Define whether heat flows through the thickness or spreads laterally. Through-thickness heat transfer favors a short path and adequate contact area. Lateral spreading depends on plan dimensions, heat-source size and where heat is removed. Simulation or prototype measurement is useful for concentrated heat sources.
Flatness, Finish and Interface Materials
Flatness is important when the ceramic contacts a semiconductor, metal base or heat sink. Surface finish should support the chosen interface material without adding unnecessary grinding cost. Thermal grease, compliant pads, brazed or metallized interfaces and mechanical clamping each create different requirements.
Electrical and Mechanical Requirements
Voltage, creepage distance, edge geometry and surface condition affect insulation performance. At the same time, fastening loads and thermal-expansion mismatch can introduce tensile stress. Avoid point loading, sharp corners and rigid joints that prevent movement between ceramic and metal.
Environmental Considerations
State humidity, coolant, cleaning chemistry, vacuum conditions and maximum temperature. Finished AlN components should be selected and handled for the real service environment rather than judged only by room-temperature data.
